Position Summary and Responsibilities

Teledyne Scientific Company has an immediate opening at its Thousand Oaks, CA facility for an entry-level Member of Technical Staff-Research Scientist position in the Optics group. The group specializes in developing, prototyping and demonstrating cutting edge optical and electro-optic technologies for agile beam control, sensors, and imaging as well as non-imaging optical systems. Liquid crystals is one of the core areas of expertise in the group.

Essential duties:

  • Develop liquid crystal device concepts and architecture for diverse applications
  • Fabricate, integrate, test, and validate prototype devices and systems
  • Simulate components, devices or system performance
  • Optimize materials formulations and electro-optic drive schemes
  • Work with management and technical team to understand customer requirements, support development, implementation, documentation and transition of the optimum solution
  • Collaborate with other researchers to generate new ideas and support research proposals for future funding opportunities
  • Build patent portfolio and publish new findings, as appropriate

Qualifications

Desired skills, experience, and qualities:

  • Strong optics background and hands-on laboratory experience in liquid crystal device fabrication and electro-optic testing
  • Experience with diverse fabrication techniques, e.g. surface treatments, bulk doping (polymers/nanoparticles/dies), photolithography, holography etc.
  • Experience with simulation of birefringent optical systems
  • Basic understanding of peripheral system components common for electro-optic devices, such as drive electronics, mechanics, thermal, software, firmware
  • Strong electronics, software and/or firmware skills are a plus
  • Excellent technical judgment, data analysis, and interpretation skills
  • Passion for new technology development and creative thinking
  • Ability to work in a team environment, without day-to-day supervision
  • Interpersonal skills, open communication, work ethics, and discipline

Education:

Recent PhD (or PhD candidates close to thesis submission) in Physics

Citizenship Requirements

Due to the type of work at the facility and certain access restrictions, successful applicants must be a U.S. Citizen.
